It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey...
With her trusty baton and six insanely organized clipboards, drum major Liza Sanders is about to take Destiny by storm—the boat, that is. When Liza discovered that her beloved band was losing funding, she found Destiny, a luxury cruise ship complete with pools, midnight chocolate buffets, and a $25,000 spring break talent show prize.
Liza can’t imagine senior year without the band, and nothing will distract her from achieving victory. She’s therefore not interested when her old camp crush, Lenny, shows up on board, looking shockingly hipster-hot. And she’s especially not interested in Russ, the probably-as-dumb-as-he-is-cute prankster jock whose ex, Demi, happens be Liza’s ex–best friend and leader of the Athenas, a show choir that’s the band’s greatest competition.
But it’s not going to be smooth sailing. After the Destiny breaks down, all of Liza’s best-laid plans start to go awry. Liza likes to think of herself as an expert at almost everything, but when it comes to love, she’s about to find herself lost at sea.
Hey guys! I am thrilled to be a part of The Trouble With Destiny blog tour! I will be reviewing the book as well as well as posting a giveaway!
ABOUT LAUREN MORRILL:
Lauren Elizabeth Morrill is many things, including, but not limited to, a writer, an educator, a badass roller derby skater, a former band nerd, an aggressive driver, and a die-hard Mac person. She also watches a lot of TV, eats a lot of junk food, and drinks a lot of Coke. It’s a wonder her brain and teeth haven’t rotted out of her head.
Lauren is the author of Meant to Be, Being Sloane Jacobs, The Trouble With Destiny, and the forthcoming My Unscripted Life (October 2016), all from Random House.
WHAT I LIKED
The main character! Liza was lovely. Her drive and passion for band was inspiring to me. She felt very realistic and I related to her a lot with her need to be in control and be perfect.
The setting. I love cruises! I’ve only been on one, a cruise to Canada in 2009, and I loved it and want more! The setting was truly unique. The vast majority of books centering around a high school with high school characters take place in? You guessed it. A high school. The only other YA books I can think of with this sort of setting is These Broken Stars, and that’s only for like .1/2 of the book. If you know of any more, tell me in the comments! Having all the characters in this setting of a cruise ship created tension and made for some serious awkwardly-enjoyable encounters!
The dynamic between Liza and Demi was really well done. They hated each other and were super competitive, but they obviously were jealous of each other. They cared for each other despite their outwards hatred.
There was some serious mind twisting in this book. The games that Liza, Lenny, Russ, and Demi played with each other were messed up and I LOVED IT.
The romance! IT WAS SO SWOONY! I’m not gonna spoil it, but she ends up with sort of the underdog and IT’S PERFECT. I shipped this romance SO HARD throughout the book and was ecstatic when they finally got together. They sure got together with a bang!
All of the minor characters were great. I especially liked Sofia and Huck. Sofia had so much wisdom and I wished we had seen more of her. Huck was hilarious and totally accepted his non-existent band talent! The romance between the teachers was really cute and funny.
The *fEeLiNgS*. This book packed on the feels! I was happy and giddy when I finished the book. It’s a feel good book!
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
The book was a bit stereotypical. There was the cut and dry ex-best friend/mean girl, the Grease style love story, the gay best friend, and more. I could predict every twist and turn.
I wish we had learned more about her parents. What we did learn was really interesting and I want more.
The Trouble With Destiny is a great book! I loved the romance, the characters, and the plot. If you are looking for a fluff YA that will leave you with that warm-gooey feeling, this is your book!
One winner (US or Canada only, sorry!) will receive an AWESOME prize pack with signed copies of all of Lauren’s books and swag!
I hope you enjoyed!
