Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl’s journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.
Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.
Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.
With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.
But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.
As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
Another fairy tale retelling. Can you guess which one? After reading Cinder and Scarlet and actually liking it I thought I could get into more fairy-tale retellings. It all started with peer-pressure. One of my book nerd friends read this book and she absolutely loved it so we made a deal. If I read this book she would have to read the Darkest Minds. I finished this book in day. It went by really fast, it was short, and it was like watching a movie. This is almost like a series but a stand-alone as well. The series is a bunch of companion novels, fairy-tale retellings. (P.S She is was only on chapter three of the Darkest Minds when I finished her book) And when I went to the Goodreads page I saw that this book had only a 3.78 rating, so I was a bit iffy. But who am I if I don’t give a book a try. The first couple chapters did start of kinda slow for me and I wasn’t a huge fan of the main character. Nyx was really “closed-book” and she never liked or trusted her sister but never let the sister know that. I was just really confused with this main character.
After we met Ignifex I was like “OTP” He was just a sassy humorous guy who is labeled as a evil demon monster, while he really isn’t. To tell the truth the only reason i kept reading this book was because of Ignifex. Of all the hundreds of characters in this book he would have to be my favorite for so many reasons. First of all Nyx is awful for the first half of the book so I kinda have to pick someone else to be my favorite character. Then we meet Shade….Shade is real shady. He is a shadow and I didn’t like or trusted him since the page we met him. Nyx cannot tell the this Shade guy is shady! She was like “OMG he just kissed me we are going to be in love forever!” Nuh uh girl. Just no.
The whole story itself was not really like the original Beauty and the Beast and that is why I like these fairy-tale retellings. They have their own twist in them. Like In the movie Beauty and the Best the town is normal. There is nothing magical about it, the only thing that it is the actual beast. Yet this book was like a high fantasy novel for me. There was the demons, shadows, witches, and a whole bunch of other stuff. The story itself was why I liked the book. It was a unique retelling and I enjoyed it. Would recommend this to everyone ever? No. Would I say to give this book a chance? Yes. Would I add it to my favorites? No. I would suggest to give this book a try but if you want a real recommendation I feel like the people that like the fantasy genre should be the one to read this book.
“Why is he scared of the dark?”
