The struggle to get into a top-tier college consumes sixteen-year-old Genie Lo's every waking thought. But when her sleepy Bay Area town comes under siege from hell-spawn straight out of Chinese folklore, her priorities are suddenly and forcefully rearranged.
Her only guide to the demonic chaos breaking out around her is Quentin Sun, a beguiling, maddening new transfer student from overseas. Quentin assures Genie she is strong enough to fight these monsters, for she unknowingly harbors an inner power that can level the very gates of Heaven.
Genie will have to dig deep within herself to summon the otherworldly strength that Quentin keeps talking about. But as she does, she finds the secret of her true nature is entwined with his, in a way she could never have imagined…
Okay if you haven’t heard about this book YET and your deeply into the book community THEN DO YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK?! For the past TWO MONTHS all I heard was amazing and wonderful things about this book and the expression of Chinese culture. I waited anxiously for my pre-order to arrive and when it did I WAS ON A PLANE TO NEW YORK! So I had to wait five days to read the damn book and it took me THREE HOURS to finish. Boy I UNDERSTAND THE HYPE! IT WAS AMAZING! I recommend it already. The review hasn’t even started and I am begging you for those who haven’t read it yet to PLEASE READ IT!
Let us commence with my favorite part of the book. THE FREAKING CHARACTERS! Genie is soon becoming one of my favorite female protagonists of all time. I relate to her ON A DEEP LEVEL. The cover of the book says “A Demon Invasion is No Excuse For Bad Grades” ummmmmm……ME?! I am so deeply invested into my future and my grades and her over the top need to do the same just makes me smile. The way she describes things are incredibly funny and I die of laughter at everything she says. I loved how she got to know her Chinese background with the story of the Monkey king but I loved the way that I as a reader got to learn about the culture. Genie is Chinese-American where I am not, and to be honest I don’t have that many friends that are as well. I love learning about the myths and legends of all cultures (this is where my obsession with Percy Jackson takes place) and I FREAKING LOVED the story of The Monkey King.
Then we get my newest addition to my never-ending fictional boyfriend list, Quentin. He just…he just…perfect? I freaking loved his relationship with Genie. How she seriously thought he was a stalker and how she was so sarcastic and mean and he never stopped bothering her. ANd the whole sword thing. Ah I love. View Spoiler »I loved when the kissed at the end and it was so “AH OUR WORLD IS ENDING!” and their relationship I really can’t express in words. THEEDNING>>>> « Hide Spoiler
I laughed so hard through the entirety of the book which really says something, I couldn’t put it down! Ad the funny thing is, I love every single character that was in this book, ESPECIALLY the villains! They just remind me so much of the villains we encounter in Percy Jackson.
HTF IS F.C. YEE SO GOOD AT WRITING! It was all BANG BANG HAHAHA SUCKAS! You know what I mean? Now I really cannot say anymore of this book. I feel like I’ve said too much already like it is so much better reading this book without knowing a thing of what is going to happen. That is how I went into this book and look how I turned out. Perfectly one hundred percent normal *twitches*
I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR THE SECOND BOOK GUYS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND! THIS BOOK WAS SO REFRESHING AND AMAZING, AND I CANNOT EXPRESS IN ANY OTHER WORDS THAT YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. PLEASE. I AM BEGGING YOU AS A HUMAN BEING, AS A READER, AND A LIVING BREATHING PERSON ON THIS PLANET EARTH.
READ THE EPIC CRUSH OF GENIE LO!
