Being one of my favorite genres I’m still pretty picky when it comes to the paranormal. Of course it isn’t my favorite (that would be steampunk/historical fiction) yet it still brings a smile onto my face. So I thought I would share my thoughts on the paranormal and recommend some of my favorites along the way.
I’m not a fan. Yes of course, I was obsessed with the Vampire Diaries (in the beginning) but all in all not a fan. I didn’t like Twilight (DON’T HURT ME), I tried reading the Vampire Academy novels but by book three I didn’t like it. Now why don’t I like vampires? To me vampires are the “good girl/bad boys” of the paranormal genre. Cliche. Of course don’t get me wrong, I’m being hypocritical I literally read Wattpad novels every single day but Vampires just don’t do it for me. If I could say one vampire I like, I’ll have to go with my buddy Simon Lewis from The Mortal Instruments series. Now I promised I would recommend one book for each paranormal creature and no it isn’t Mortal Instruments (because I already know you guys shall read it 😉 ) but it is actually The Shadowhunter Academy series, which centers around Simon and spoiler stuff.
I really like Werewolves. Always loved them. There is just something about them that makes me want to buy all the books. I love the whole history behind werewolves especially when it comes to “mates”. I freaking love those types of books. I promise this is that last time I mention Wattpad! But literally half of my library is werewolf books, but half of the half are terribly written. Now I have TWO recommendations for y’all. One being the famous A Court of Thorns and Roses and the sequel (best read of 2016) by Sarah J. Maas. I mentioned this book millions of times but it doesn’t erase the fact that those who haven’t read this book need to read it. Second recommendation being Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge, another great and amazing read.
Now I’ve gotta say…these are probably my favorite type of paranormal creatures ever. Fun fact. A month before starting this blog, I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited and if you guys don’t know what that it is basically when you pay like a certain fee every month and you get ten books from the kindle store, but they can’t be just any book. I didn’t have Kindle Unlimited for a very long time but when I did all I read were angel and demon books, and honestly those books made me want to review them and start this blog. Most of my angel/demon books have very snarky and witty characters and they are the reason I end up loving every single book that has angels or demons. For this creature I’m going to have to go with my homegirl Jennifer L. Armentrout’s White Hot Kiss. I’m being a little bias since she is my favorite author but this book is no doubt the best demon book I ever read. It doesn’t have angels in it though but if you’re looking for an angel book go with the Angelfall but Susan Ee.
I do not like zombies. I’m saying it straight up. I’m a wuss when it comes to zombies. So this part is going to be short. I just find zombies so creepy that I can’t help imagining the zombie apocalypse when reading/watching anything involved with zombies. Now I have one exception. Literally only ONE exception. Strange and Deadly but Susan Dennard will be my only exception when it comes to zombies. That book is just so amazing and unexpected that *sigh* I love.
If you’re a big reader of my blog you will know my obsession with the Lux series, so there is no doubt in my mind that I freaking love aliens. There isn’t just the Lux series though. There is Alienated by Melissa Landers, Gravity by Melissa West, Earth and Sky by Megan Crewe that really make me fall in love with the concept of aliens. It is my second favorite paranormal creature right after Angels/Demons. But even books that make aliens that evil beings like The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey are amazing as well.
Demigods/Urban Fantasy Beings
I have to give a shoutout to these amazing folks, even if they’re not considered “creatures”. They are either half human, or humans with special powers. Percy Jackson is one of the best characters I’ve ever read about, and before I read Percy Jackson I was already very interested in Greek mythology but these books just made me want to become these characters even though they are living the hard knock life. My favorite power from all the Demigods is very hard to choose. Percy Jackson’s ability to control water and talk to sea creatures really intrigues me but at the same time I would love to have Leo’s power of fire or creating something out of nothing. Now urban fantasy beings. When I talk about these beings I mean regular ol people with powers. Simple but powerful. I can’t even think who of all the Urban Fantasy books I’ve read is my favorite but for some reason The Darkest Minds keep popping in my head. FUN GABI FACT! The Darkest Minds was my first book on my bookshelf!
So that is all of my thoughts on the paranormal but I would love to hear your thoughts as well! And I love doing these discussion posts so of course if you have anything you’d like me to discuss please leave it down below. Peace out *drops mic*
