Yes, you read that title correctly. I find action BORING!
This realization came to me in an epiphany the other side when I was sitting on the couch with my mother, reading Starflight by Melissa Landers. I’ve often found myself skipping through long action scenes because THEY BORE ME!
Long fight scenes? Boring.
Elaborate heist sequences? Boring.
A car chase? Boring.
Running away from an exploding space ship? Boring.
Big war scenes with weapons and blood everywhere? Boring.
That scene in A Court of Thorns and Roses when Feyre is trying to kill that giant snake for like 20 pages? Boring.
You get my point.
They all kinda feel the same to me. I get confused about who’s who and what’s going on and I just lose interest during those scenes. I often myself flipping back to the action once it’s all over and thinking, “Wait, what just happened?”
I cannot for the life of me figure out why this is! A big driving factor of books for me is romance, so maybe it’s the lack of romance in those scenes? I also really love character development, is it that? I’ve never been a fan of violence, but that can’t be it because not all action scenes are violent!
I think I much prefer passionate dialogues or scenes that exemplify character dynamics rather than character actions.
For sooooo many people, a big selling point of a novel is “action-packed.” I see that phrase used in so many book descriptions!
Example #1: A blurb on The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey
Example #2: A blurb on Legend by Marie Lu
I’m not saying that I HATE all action. I just find the long action scenes with fighting and lives at risk and complicated plans to be boring. I know, I’m crazy! Most people love action-packed books!
Just not this girl.
Does anyone agree with me or am I all alone? What in books bores you? Let me know in the comments!
