Hey! On Saturday, I went to National Book Festival in Washington, DC! I went with my mom, my mom’s friend Laurie, and my non-blogger friends Emma and Rachel. The day was super crazy and chaotic but fun!
We arrived at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center around 12:15. My mom dropped Laurie, Emma, Rachel, and me off at the front door and went to find a parking spot. The first thing we did was go to the information desk and get maps and, well, information!
Next, we went downstairs to the lower level where all the signings and book sales were. We walked around a bit and went in the book sales area. I didn’t buy anything because I’m still on a book buying ban, but my friend Rachel bought David Baldacci’s latest book. At this point, my mom met up with us. She was only able to get a two-hour parking spot.
My mom and Laurie went to get us lunch while the three of us went to Jenny Han’s presentation. One our way to Jenny’s presentation, we saw Tom Brokaw being interviewed by C-SPAN! It was pretty cool.
Her presentation was in the teen room, all the way upstairs and ACROSS THE STREET. We got to her presentation about 20 minutes early, so we had to line up outside. IT WAS CRAZY. Buzz Aldrin was there, and his presentation happened to be in the room next to the teen room, so we got bombarded with crazed people lining up to see an astronaut. His line was so long that they had to cut it off and add another presentation for him to the schedule! Around 1:20, they let us into the room. As we were walking in, my mom and Laurie met us and gave us our food. The lines were so long that they were only able to get us french fries. Better than nothing!
Jenny’s presentation was great! She talked about her inspirations for her characters, what it’s like to write a series with her best friend Siobhan Vivian, and what she would do in Lara Jean’s situation!
“I would probably drop out of school!” -Jenny Han
After Jenny Han’s presentation, we went all the way back to the lower level for some signings! My mom went to move the car (two hour parking), Laurie got in Jenny Han’s signing line to wait for us, and Rachel, Emma, and me got in Sabaa Tahir’s signing line. We figured that Sabaa’s line would move faster than Jenny’s, seeing as Jenny has eight books while Sabaa has one.
While waiting in Sabaa’s line, I met up with my good friend Cat from Kit’s Books! It was so nice to see her and she got to meet some of my IRL friends.
Well as it turns out, Jenny’s line moved faster than Sabaa’s! Laurie called me to tell me that the line was moving quickly and that I better come over, so Rachel and I ran over to Jenny’s line while Emma stayed waiting in Sabaa’s! Jenny was personalizing one book and signing all. I chose to get my hardcover of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before signed. I was super star-struck by her when I actually met her! I read her books before I even got into YA so she’s one of my favorite authors! She said to me, “You are a super fan!” I had all eight of her YA books with me! She was soooo sweet! I wasn’t able to get a picture because we were ushered along quickly, but I got to talk to her and that’s all that matters to me!
Next, Rachel and I went back to Sabaa Tahir’s line where Emma was waiting for us. Laurie went to find my mom who was out getting us Subway. We chatted with people in line until it was our turn to meet Sabaa. She was super nice to us and she has the COOLEST signature! Emma and I told her how excited we were when we found out the news about the Ember sequel in school!
After Sabaa, my mom brought us our lunch and we all split up once again. My mom went to wait in Michael Buckley’s line for Rachel and Laurie went to wait in Libba Bray’s line for Emma and me. The three of us sat on the floor by the YA signings and ate our lunch. This was like 3:00. Then, we just walked around a bit. We explored the Scholastic displays and the Pavillion of the States area. We said hi to the people at the Maryland (our home state) table. We got all kinds of swag and buttons and bookmarks.
We made our way back to the signing area just in time to meet Libba Bray! She was signing and personalizing all books! I love Libba Bray so much, and I told her that! I told her that I saw her perform at Yallfest last year and how talented she is! I also told her that I’m starting a book club at my high school and that we are going to be reading Beauty Queens.
After Libba, we went to where my mom was waiting in Michael Buckley’s line. At this point, Rachel’s parents showed up so they took over my mom’s place in line. Rachel left with her parents and my mom, Laurie, Emma, and I headed home. Not before I tried to buy a tshirt, which they SOLD OUT OF! I’m still upset about not getting a tshirt! Anyways, we headed home to good ole’ Maryland and met my dad and brother for Chinese food. Emma’s parent’s picked her up, and that’s it! It was an exhausting day but SUPER FUN!
Were any of you at National Book Festival? If so, what authors did you see? What do you think?
Do you like these type of posts? Should I do more for other events that I got to?
Thanks for reading!
