Hellloooo okay so me (Gabi) and Eli had this discussion and we can’t agree on something. Eadlyn and America. Who is the better protagonist? I as a Gabi think that America is the better protagonist while Eli thinks that Eadlyn is stronger as the center of the novel. Keep in mind that America had three books to grow, while we are judging Eadlyn solely in her arc in The Heir. So we decided to have a bit of a debate going here and at the end we want you to say who you think is the better protagonist. Okay? Okay.
Pro America (Gabi):
Starting off with America. Lets just get one thing right out of the way. She is nice! She isn’t spoiled! Yes at the beginning she is a tough cookie at first but keep in mind she was taken away from her parents and her first love thinks that they aren’t right together. She is very protective towards her friends and family. Think of Marlee for example. When Marlee went through that thing that I can’t say because SPOILERS America was there for her the entire time this was happening to her. Not only that but she was the one that got rid of the castes. Its kind of the whole point of this dystopian was that these castes were ruining the country and *cough* America got rid of them. Now you know she wasn’t on board with this Selection. That’s why she helped Maxon choose a girl other than herself. Its not her fault that Maxon fell in love with her!
Pro Eadlyn (Eli):
Now it is easy to read from America’s perspective and then move to Eadlyn and think that America is far nicer and therefore a better center for a novel. America does do many great deeds throughout her trilogy and continues this in the Heir, meanwhile Eadlyn can be spoiled at the beginning of her book. But that is clearly Kiera’s intention with the character! We need to have a character with flaws to ground the novel at the beginning, otherwise there is no room for her to grow. Now don’t get me wrong, America has flaws as I will point out in my next paragraph, but Eadlyn grows much more in one novel than America does in three. Another reason Eadlyn is a great example as a protagonist is that while America enters the Selection for the reason of wanting money (seriously, that’s what her mom promises her if she signs up!) Eadlyn starts her own Selection because her people are rioting and she is trying to save them time. Eadlyn motives put a lot more at stake than love and a crown. She is truly dealing with a nation at her hands, while America is dealing with simply love. That isn’t a bad motivation per se, but one is clearly more noble than the other. For these reasons, Eadlyn proves herself to be a far stronger and more interesting protagonist than America ever was.
Now wait. Maxon and America were that saw the problems that was going on in the country and they were the ones that suggested the Selection and Easlyn refused immediately. It took time for Eadlyn to have this Selection. Now only that but she is so rude and stubborn. Lets take Kyle for example a fellow book lover he tries to be nice to Eadlyn during The Selection but she’s like noooooo I will never talk about my feelings with you! Going back to the book lover things. Eadlyn doesn’t care for books……….doesn’t…..care……HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE BOOKS. BOOK ARE LIFE. YOU’RE IN A BOOK!! *Christine voice* WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE! Kyle is such a sweety then Eadlyn likes him and kisses him but doesn’t want him?!?!?!?!? You’re insane! Now yes she does grow blah blah blah but that is only at the end of the book. When she realizes how serious the problem is. Don’t even get me started on her brother. Her brother left because he wants to be with his true love and she doesn’t accept it. She doesn’t care about him when he leaves. She cares that he left HER! Okay I’m done because if I keep going I can write my own book. But lets get one thing straight I don’t hate her. I dislike the choices she’s made. Yes I know that there s going to be a second book but I need to see how she grows on me but for now America is my favorite.
Anti America (Eli):
So your opening for America is that she’s nice. Nice is boring. I love Kiera Cass and the Selection series but America is the most boring character in that world. She is a rather passive character except for some random moments where she does good deeds. In all honesty America is a character things happen to, not someone who does the things. Also she is so annoying! She is flip flopping between Aspen and Maxon and then Maxon kisses another girl (which he is allowed to do and shoe know he has been doing) and she gets irrationally mad at him! It just doesn’t seem fair. And the biggest point you can make against America. Make. Up. Your. Flipping. Mind. God, I cannot be the only one that was just tired of her switching between the two guys in the Elite. oh, I love you, Aspen. No, I love you maxon. Maxon, how could you? I love Aspen! Maxon. Aspen. Maxon. Aspen. Maxon. AAARRRGGGH!!!!
What do you think? Who’s your favorite? We would love to know!
