Penelope Landlow has grown up with the knowledge that almost anything can be bought or sold—including body parts. She’s the daughter of one of the three crime families that control the black market for organ transplants.
Penelope’s surrounded by all the suffocating privilege and protection her family can provide, but they can’t protect her from the autoimmune disorder that causes her to bruise so easily.
And in her family’s line of work no one can be safe forever.
All Penelope has ever wanted is freedom and independence. But when she’s caught in the crossfire as rival families scramble for prominence, she learns that her wishes come with casualties, that betrayal hurts worse than bruises, that love is a risk worth taking . . . and maybe she’s not as fragile as everyone thinks.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. IT WAS AMAZING IN SO MANY WAYS. THE STORY. THE CHARACTERS. THE MYSTERY. THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA RETELLING. CUE CRYING GIF! I NEED MORE OF THIS SERIES. I KNOW THERE IS A SECOND BOOK AND I WILL WAIT UNTIL THE SECOND BOOK COMES OUT. MY SHIP HAS SAILED AND IT WON’T BE TURNING BACK UNTIL THE DAY THAT THE SECOND BOOK IS RELEASED. OKAY? OKAY.
First lets start with the characters, it the best way to start. Penelope. For the first half of the book I just felt SO bad for her. Her life is just awful. It like she’s a princess locked up in a tower. Everybody thinks that she is the most fragile person ever just because she has this disorder that makes her bruise easily and yes she is a fragile person on the outside but nobody has ever took the time to see the un-fragile person on the inside (except her brother, Char, and Garrett-ish) She has a mind of her own but she just doesn’t use it for half the book and for the other half she is just kick-ass. Except that she does have some trouble trusting people less in the second half of the book. She is trying to solve the mystery which is her family and all trying to be a “normal girl”. But everybody has different definitions of the word normal. I feel like everybody has a crazy side just that these “normal” people hide it better 🙂 For Penelope normal is going to school, having a boyfriend, getting out of the house, which is for me also normal. Does she do this stuff? Nope. So I could see why she herself would say that her family is mysterious with her.
Now usually I would go to the person we meet secondly, but I REALLY want to talk about Char, and how he is perfection. Char doesn’t think Pen as the fragile girl she is made to be. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that she meets knows about her disorder but Char doesn’t so he does have a bonus to actually thinking that she isn’t fragile. Char is a gentleman. Thats all i have to say about him. He asks permission, he asks if you’re okay, he lets you take charge. All gentleman inside that handsome guy. Not only that but he is also a pretty smart guy. He knows a little about science fiction which you know I adore. You can tell he has officially been added to my never ending fictional boyfriend list.
Then we have Garrett. Oh Garrett. How you made me head hurt. You were just confusing to me. One time you know what you wanted, then you didn’t, then everything messed up, then you confuse more people it was just a big confuzzle with you. Thats why I am certainly not your biggest fan for this book, and if the story continues you will have to have a very solid reason and evidence for me to like you again.
Now the story itself was AMAZING! It was mysterious, thriller-ish, and it did have the fairytale retelling vibe that you get while reading fairy tales. This book was supposed to be shown as a Princess and the Pea retelling and I could see what TIffany was trying to do with the characters and the story, and in my opinion she did it perfectly. I cannot wait for the second book to come out. I recommend to this to all. If you’re not a big fan of thriller or mystery this is a great starter book for that genre. You will definitely see me post more about this series as soon as I hear news 🙂
